Vonnegut is a cynical social commentator who puts particular issues of race, class and cultural norms into their most simple forms, displaying their ridiculousness. The narrator's voice is almost condescending, but in a way readers will find enjoyable and clever.

His characters are comical, but the novel lacks heart (which is by design). This doesn't mean one won't feel for the characters, but that one isn't likely to be moved emotionally. Vonnegut does satire and pointed social commentary very well (even if one disagrees with his social-political worldview).

Vonnegut's friend, John Irving, is a writer who creates rich, hearty characters with comical plot lines, while providing insightful social commentary (my own preference). But, if you want a cheeky read that is easy, well-crafted and simple, Breakfast of Champions is a good fit.

I highly recommend books by both authors.

bizarre and fast paced. i loved this because it was simply so strange. funny and gripping exploration into what it means to make art and be a novelist. parody of america is also always a fun time.

As great as Vonnegut's work should have been. However, comparing to the highest level standards Kurt had set with [b:The Sirens of Titan|4982|The Sirens of Titan|Kurt Vonnegut|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1340744277s/4982.jpg|905970] and [b:Slaughterhouse-Five|4981|Slaughterhouse-Five|Kurt Vonnegut|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1337996187s/4981.jpg|1683562] still this is not that level in my opinion. There were moment I was full of joy and happiness that I'm reading such a masterpiece, but also were moment when I felt bit bored with repetitiveness of patterns.

But again - this is great great work!
