Hot damn. I don’t know if I just slid back into the vision where it left off in Dune (which I finished many months ago, time contracts so strangely), or if this held that same enchanting power and snared me anew. The themes the first book worked so hard to painstakingly deeply bring about got full play here, with the addition of further exploration of the universe, Tleilaxu, Zensunni, Alia, everything. I missed the old Chani, she felt flatter here than before, but I can comfortably chalk that up as intentional, her time away from the desert.
Wow. Yeah. That was really great.

Didn’t like this one as much as the first book, but it was a good addition to the series. New powers come into play that are quite interesting, and seeing how Paul’s power has grown and the plots that arise is quite cool, though the whole Duncan/Hayt and Alia romance thing that started is kinda weird to me… I will continue in the series though! I am curious as to where the series heads next!

i think this book probably deserves a re-read from me (the great benadryl incident…) as i don’t think i fully digested some of the more philosophical and psychological political discussions & conversations. still enjoyed this one & was definitely a page-turner, but compared to the first one i just didn’t like it as much. not enough happened. also truly didn’t dig the b-plot of “finding the mother of his heir” … especially the stuff with his sister. idk it was fine!!
2 out of 5 stars
Unfortunately, this sequel to the very popular sci-fi epic “Dune” did not leave the best impression on me. I think it all comes down to the fact that most of the book is just exposition dump after exposition dump. Not a lot actually happens in the book overall. Yes, it is quite a bit shorter than the first “Dune”, but that does not mean that all activity, excitement, etc. should be mostly eliminated. Most of the time, we read about Paul’s conflicted mind as he tries to prevent the Jihad that he has foreseen. Either that, or we hear about other characters plotting the emperor’s demise. Again, it is all just exposition and can get very boring at times.
Also, I think this book lacks the all-important set pieces that the original had. Simply put, the story was not very memorable. As of the writing of this review, it has already been a few weeks since I read the book, and I have already forgotten large chunks of the story. I guess it just wasn’t interesting enough to me to have a lasting impact.
I desperately wanted this series to be exhilarating and refreshing, but unfortunately, that is just not the case in book #2. I am still on the edge of whether I should continue reading on or not, but I do certainly feel like my time may be better spent elsewhere.
