Ever since the raid on the YFZ ranch in Eldorado, Tx brought the FLDS into the spotlight, I have been interested in and reading books about this group. This book, "The Witness Wore Red" tells Rebecca Musser's story. She was raised in the FLDS and at age 18 was married to Rulon Jeffs, their Prophet, who at the time was 85 years old. After Rulon's death, when his son Warren Jeffs told Becky that he would marry her either to himself or someone else and that he would "break" her, she fled from the group. She tells about her life inside and outside of the FLDS. Her sister Elissa, who was forced to marry at age 14 was part of the first lawsuit against Warren Jeffs and Becky was a key witness in that trial. When the YFZ ranch was raided, she was called in as a liason to help the police understand how to speak to and work with the people there, most of whom were her relatives. She acted as a witness in many trials against various men in the FLDS, testifying over 20 times. She learned and revealed how the FLDS was an organized crime ring hiding behind the name of religion, taking money and property from people, abusing women and children. This book is well written and shows yet another view of the FLDS debacle.

I read this story on Audible.com

I enjoyed listening to this memoir about a young woman's experience as a member of a polygamous cult and her escape. I have always been interested in hearing about experiences about people who have escaped cults. It was hard to read about the instances of sexual abuse and domestic violence that occurred in the story. It is deeply saddening and raw. Be prepared to deeply moved.

The only reason that I didn't give the book a higher rating is due to the over flowery writing throughout the book.

Generally, I don't read non-fiction but I've started this book and just couldn't stop reading it.

This is a totally terrifying story. What happened in this sect, which is still happening in similar sects, is difficult to accept and sometimes difficult to understand with the human mind. The history of violence and abuse described in this book is really terrifying. I am glad that I read it, it allows me to appreciate the world in which I grew up.

At the same time, I am fully aware that this is a story told from the perspective of one particular person - Rebecca. I get the impression that the author has not always been completely honest, it seems to me that sometimes she omits some details and unduly emphasizes her role in solving the whole case. Reading the book I get the impression that Rebecca was very much involved in the life of the community, she tried to be a role model, yet she never mentions whether she participated in the atrocities of the system in which she was functioning. She passes quite smoothly over the fact that her younger sister was repeatedly raped by her husband. I have the impression that Rebecca sometimes overlooks the facts that could put her in a bad light.

Nevertheless, it is a very moving story. I know that Rebecca's sister and her brother Cole wrote their own books but currently I do not plan to read them. That would be too much emotion.

3.5

"The Witness Wore Red - The 19th Wife Who Brought Polygamous Cult Leaders to Justice" made me so very angry that in this day and age evil people still twist the words of the Bible for their own sick purposes. I knew some things about polygamy and the Latter-Day Saints but to read Rebecca's inside story and her escape is an eye opener. How the men in power at the FLDS become perverted and use women for their own pleasures is horrible. The way these men kick out the boys because they would be a threat to their power is awful. The brain washing and suppression, especially of the women, is mind numbing. To think that this is still going on and, even nearby in Bountiful, BC is a crime. Rebecca was brave to come out with this book. A must read.

Such an in-depth look into a world little of us want to admit exists, let alone exists in our own backyards.

Religion, like money, promotes nothing but fear and hatred when placed in the wrong hands. Religion is meant to promote love and acceptance not fear and obedience as these twisted FLDS leaders have done.

Kudos to this woman for overcoming such huge boundaries to try to bring some peace and happiness to these many, many people.

I think this writer did an incredible job at examining and explaining both sides of this debate as she struggled to find herself as well.
