The title and the cover page of this book peaked my interest almost right away. Then I noticed that it was based in 1964, and I was sold! Now that I have read it, I wish I looked into the synopsis a little bit more... because this book was all sorts of BORING!

"Bad Girls Never Say Die" follows Evie and her group of "tough" friends. This is the type of group who cuts class to smoke their cigarettes, hang out in abandoned houses, and causes a ruckus wherever they go!
While the girls are hanging out at their local drive in theater... Evie finds herself being dragged into a field by a drunk rich kid (a.k.a. tea sippers). While he attempts to sexually assault Evie... a stranger takes action and stabs him. Ultimately killing him. Her hero happens to be the mysterious new girl, Diane. Diane was once a tea sipper, but has now found herself living on the wrong side of the tracks with her aunt. In a state of panic Evie and Diane take action in order to hide what they have done! Because of Diane's heroic act, Evie decides to take the new girl under her wing and protect her at all costs! This new acquaintance quickly developed into a close friendship, because it turns out that Diane is "tougher" than she seems.
Will Evie and Diane be able to keep their secret? Will Diane be able to overcome her baggage?
Or will the "tea sippers" win again?

As I mentioned earlier.... literally nothing happened in this book! It is mainly just Diane telling stories about her life. Yes, she has lived an extremely sad life.... however thats about it! I thought this was going to be a bad to the bone, free spirited, bad ass story. NOPE! Bad to the bone? More like "annoying as a sliver"! The girls were so juvenile and oblivious! If it weren't for the triggering aspects of this book, it could pass as a middle grade thriller! Overall, this was extremely disappointing!

I'm not quite sure what I was expecting from this book, but it wasn't what I got. Perhaps it's because it's been so many years since I read The Outsiders, but I found myself wanting more from this. The book starts with a dramatic event, and ends with one. But the middle--which should have been tense and emotionally charged--just fell flat. The characters felt rather shallow to start, and their development was weak and not quite believable. Much of the middle consisted of the characters talking, and not doing much else--including multiple summaries of past events.

Overall, I was just a little disappointed. It wasn't terrible, but I can't exactly say I'd recommend it.

In 1960s Houston, Evie and her friends are bad girls. They are the type to smoke cigarettes, skip school, wear bold makeup, and hang out with boys. When she gets saved from an attempted sexual assault by a so called good girl from the right side of the tracks, her and Evie now share a secret.

Apparently this takes from The Outsiders but genderflipped, which is a title I've heard but I actually don't know or care anything about lmao.

I really liked Evie and Diane's friendship. It was so good, god damn. But then there was so much more to this like a star crossed romance Evie gets stuck in the middle of, and a whole murder?? Then a LOT of small town / class shit and of course misogyny and racism. The ending was absolute ass and ruined the whole book for me tbh like yes it clears up a loose end but also... awful and I laughed because of how stupid it was.

I loved [b:Moxie|33163378|Moxie|Jennifer Mathieu|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1494950979l/33163378._SY75_.jpg|46824140] by this author but unfortunately this one didn't hit the spot.

Evie is from the wrong side of the tracks. In 1950s Houston, money and class are divided harshly. She’s from the poorer part of town and in tough crowd of girls who wear dark liner and cut class. She’s the youngest girl the tight knit group within the tough crowd, and working at fitting it.
One evening at a local hangout Evie is attacked by a young man from the rich part of town. When she regains consciousness she find herself entwined in the murder of a prominent son of the town and in debt to the lovely Diane who is also from a prominent family.
Diane’s secrets, her family’s rules, and the expectations of her friends threatened to break Evie as she struggles to do the right thing, for everyone.
This fresh retelling of The Outsiders is relevant and overdue.

This book was fun and I really enjoyed reading it, but I had to take points off because much of the 60s nostalgia didn't feel authentic, but rather based off of movies like Grease, West Side Story and obviously the works of SE Hinton.

This was supposed to be a gender-swapped "Outsiders," but it missed some of the magic that SE Hinton added with her writing style where every word was worth reading.

The Outsiders meets Grease in this YA novel set in 1964 Houston. Will be booktalking this to a 7th grade class who is currently reading The Outsiders.
