I wanted to like this book more than I did. Some parts were intriguing while others seemed to be more detailed than necessary (ie: slower). I’m not that familiar with Italy’s WWII experience so enjoyed learning about that through this book. Compared to other books set during the holocaust, which I’ve read many, I was definitely less connected to these characters.

This true story follows Pino, a young Italian man, during the Nazi occupation and the end of WWII. Pino helps Jews escape into Switzerland, spies on a high-ranking German officer, and even finds himself face-to-face with Mussolini. I had issues with the writing—it’s very narrative rather than descriptive—but I was sucked in and it gave my buddy readers and I a lot to discuss! Would definitely recommend if you like WWII, especially since the Italian perspective is less-often told.

I always find myself reading about WW2 but the books are always so well written & this was no exception. Very heartfelt and emotional story about a forgotten hero of WW2. Mark Sullivan always has me so invested in the story & just has a phenomenal writing style. Definitely worth the read.
