Easily the best book I've read in a while. Really inspiring all around. My copy had an excellent interview with Hopkinson at the back. The woman is obviously brilliant, and a joy to read in any format.

I can't do it.  I dread picking this up and I don't care enough about the story overall to force myself to push through.  I don't like slavery stories and I need to just accept that and move on.  Even with Jeanna, she is not happy and is living through the generosity of her lover (who depends on his mother, who depends on her husbands money)...the POV of the unborn child isn't compelling either.

I'm sure if I read slavery/black suffering stories I"d enjoy this but I simply can't.  It's killing my reading mojo and not in a good way.  This is a reluctant DNF because I wanted to love this but I have to be honest with myself.

Another one from Nalo Hopkinson. Despite the fact that it does bear a certain incompleteness, I still continue to be fascinated by this unique genre.

there are somethings that I love about this book and the weaving of multiple stories that come from diffenent times and locations - although not my favourite book from this author.

This was not an easy read but it was still a really amazing book! I loved each woman whose perspective we lived with and admired how they navigated their situations and their spunk/spirit. I will definitely check out this authors other work now too!

A mix of historical fiction and magical realism, I don’t think this book did either genre well. The characters were unlikeable, and there was no real plot which made it hard to put up with the unlikeable characters. It was thematically interesting but the execution was lacking greatly
