This book is weird, but good weird (if it makes any sense). Something that I will definitely want to re-read one day.
What a groundbreaking book this was. Published before Brave New World and before 1984. So many books borrow from the themes here. I'd love to read a biography of Zamyatin one day.
Zamyatin's dystopia was unexpectedly...cheerful? Well, definitely not dreary like the worlds described by writers Zamyatin influenced, like Orwell and Rand. Perhaps the atmosphere was due to Zamyatin's lively prose, Grover Gardner's narration, or D-503's conformity.
This is A LOT like Brave New World, with a little 1984 thrown in. Considering it was written before BOTH of those, I have to give it credit. We was obviously a big influence on Huxley and Orwell. The issue I had with this novel was the lack of adequate plot development. I couldn't stay with the story line, and I didn't care about the characters. I saw the ending a mile away...it just didn't stack up. I give it three stars, however, because it paved the way for much better anti-utopian work.
Read for Class.
It was very interesting reading this dystopian novel where the main character isn’t completely for the cause against the government. I’m so used to the main character doing everything they can to stop the government and the story taking place over three books that this was a nice change. I was not expecting the ending, but because it is an older novel from Russia I guess that is the only way it could have ended. Very nice to see the impact that this novel has had on other dystopians and how the cultural view changes the overall story.

A bit mechanical and artificially written for my taste, but I’m an absolutely sucker for anti utopias, so I was still deeply affected by this book. I think, like “1984”, it’s one of those books that everyone should carry in their memories, reminding them that even in the most impossible circumstances you can still fight in your own way.
