I did enjoy this. Heavy on the sci-fi and strongly established a world that I am eager to revisit in the up-and-coming companion novel.

There were problems for me. Mostly to do with a big emotional (spoiler) moment. How that played out made it lose it's power for me. Tragedy was only touched on. I was feeling it and then it was remedied to quickly.

All in all, Glad I made this one of my last reads of the year to go out on a high! A soft-ish YA Solaris in many respects.

This was a fun read! I enjoyed how the characters were trying to survive after a crash on an unknown planet..
Our main characters Lilac and Tarver couldn’t be more different. But when they get stranded together, they must help each other survive.
There was a lot of mystery behind what was happening and what kind of life forms were on the planet. It kept me guessing.
The romance aspect was good. Nothing brings people together like life and death!
I’m looking forward to continuing the series!

This successfully got me out of a slump so bless 🙏🏻 RTC whenever I catch up on my long list of reviews lol

So boring.

Is it Science Fiction? YA Romance? A survivalist tale in a foriegn landscape? Yes. Blending all of these things together (okay the science fiction element was a bit light and more whoo-whoo science fantasy) These Broken Stars weaves a compelling tale of two teenagers crossing plains and mountains after the wreck of a spaceship.

Lilac is your average, daddy-is-powerful-space shipping-magnate socialite with a secret from her past that makes her rude and biting to boys to discourage their interest.

Tarver is a war-decorated soldier only a few years older, but massively more experienced in reality, and decidedly lower on the social totem pole.

They meet on the huge ship Icarus for a fleeting moment and both their lives are changed forever.

The biggest portion of the book is spent watching the inevitable toughening up of Lilac and the breaking down of the social and emotional barriers these two have erected as they face different challenges surviving in the wild with only minimum gear. And then there's the little problem of the voices Lilac starts hearing (and only she can) just as Tarver is beginning to like her.

The chapters are broken up with short sections of dialogue between Tarver and an anonymous interrogator, and some of the interesting tension is created as what we read happens doesn't jive with what he tells the interrogator. Something incredible, terrible, and wonderful happens on the planet before they are rescued, something more than just the YA kissing and touching, and Tarver and Lilac have to keep it a secret.

Mostly this is compelling because of Lilac's and Tarver's relationship. I mean, it's the whole "socialite falls in love with a soldier" kind of trope, but it's done so skillfully in both Tarver and Lilac's POV that you just want them to go on traveling the plains and exploring dark, emotional crevices of each other forever.

I also appreciate how they both end up saving each other multiple times, so Lilac isn't helpless. The author even turns her girliness into toughness by having her slog through forest in high heels and a cocktail dress! (and bear it without complaining despite the damage it does her)

Excellent romance, nice adventure with a bit of science fantasy to spice it up. There's some kissing and touching, but I would totally let my 5th grader daughter read it.as

It's basically a love story.

I genuinely did not expect this book to surprise me so much. Nor did I expect to cry so much either. There was a huge plot twist that happened that I did not expect by any means. I really enjoyed reading from Tarver and Lilac's perspectives and I enjoyed the plotline of them trying to survive on an alien world. However, in the end, when the characters start making connections on the underlying plot, the whole thing seemed kind of confusing to me. I couldn't really get a grasp on what was happening. But I still enjoyed the book to make me want to continue on with the series.

I feel compelled to write a review for this book given it is one of the only sci-fi books that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed. I found the plot to be engaging without the introduction bizarre, unnecessary creations of imagination, and any unfamiliar details that were included were woven well into the established plot line. Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly, the relationship read as genuine-- much unlike many science fiction novels that force chemistry. Overall, this was an excellent and enjoyable read.
