Um, WTF? I don't get it about the end of book.....

I really enjoyed this one. Unique concept. Great characters (
Spoiler I'm mainly talking about Hetty, Reese, and Welch; I don't know if I like Byatt much after the Teddy thing
). The writing style was pretty when it needed to be, and gory when it needed to be. Though at first I didn't mind the comma splices as an intentional device, they eventually they got a bit excessive, but that wasn't too much of an issue.

One part that was a little off for me.
Spoiler Now, I understand Reese's upset after Hetty kills Mr. Harker, but the way it caused her to break up with Hetty didn't make sense to me, considering how long she'd been into Hetty. It seems to me that Reese was too logical a character to blame Hetty like she does, so it felt a bit OOC. For a girl who's skeptical about everything, I would've expected that deep down, she already believed he was dead. And she closes herself off from Hetty when Hetty was all she had left? After already opening up to her significantly? I don't know. It just didn't feel quite right, how it went.

But anyway, that was just one itsy bitsy part of the book. The rest of it was incredibly engaging and easy to visualize. However, the ending left many unanswered questions. I could tell from about thirty pages from the end that there was no way everything could get wrapped up, which is why I was shocked to find there is no talk of a sequel. Please Rory Power, finish the story!

what the fuck!

Luke warm feelings towards this one.

Queer horror is my new favourite genre!

I really don’t know how many stars to give this! On one hand it is very scary, tightly wound, pulled me along. But on the other we never really find out much about the metaphorical main character, the things that would finally explain wth is going on, and the ending doesn’t feel at all like an ending or explanation. I think I’m spoiled on expecting Crichton-level research because I just kept thinking “but how?? But how exactly??” Definitely a terrifying idea, but I think it maybe tried to do too much.
