This was a slow read for me, but the pace fits the tone of the story ultimately. It did many things I was not expecting, some good, some not so good (no spoilers). It has a good payoff at the end though, so it's worth sticking with its slowness since it's only 142 pages.

The writing is BEAUTIFUL, I mean really sublimely penned, but the narrative was lacking for me. It didn’t quite live up to its premise of “gay time-travelers from WW2 searching for each other through the ages.” I mean, it was about that, yes... but it was more about the modern-day bookseller searching for *them* than the lovers searching for *each other.* In fact, the very characters the premise revolved around didn’t even spend much time in the story! Granted, it was a novella, but I think it would have done itself a greater service if it had been fleshed out as a novel, with a more accurate blurb on the back. I gave it some stars for the writing though.

I chose this book based on the cover and the blurb on the back. I was intrigued to discover if these two gentlemen were able to reconnect in the same timeline. This book was just ok for me. I liked the alternating timelines, but don't feel that I truly connected with the book

I knew the synopsis of this book before I read it: two men fall in love in ww2 but an experiment goes wrong and they're flung apart through space and time. They leave notes for each other in books of poetry, hoping to get their timelines to intersect so they can be reunited. If I hadn't known this I would've been even more confused than I was when I started reading. There's a lot of jumping around through time and perspective, which is expected I guess but it took me a while to figure out who and when I was reading from.

Also this book is really mis-marketed. The majority of the story is told from a seperate man in modern day trying to figure out the mystery of Tom and Ben. The ending tries to justify why he's here but it just didn't work for me. I went into this book expecting it to be a love story, and I would say that that's my fault for having presumptions if it weren't for the book being marketed AS A LOVE STORY.

The letters between the couple that we get to see were really lovely and had that desperate, romantic yearning I wanted to read more of. This book has a great concept but the execution leaves me wanting. The prose was nice and it was short so I sped through it but ultimately I was let down.

Well-written. I would have preferred the focus be on the Tom and Ben plot rather than Emmett investigating it.  This is probably my fault, but for the first half of the book I was convinced Emmett was a woman.
Thought the Emmett and Thorn side plot was kind of cute. Then when I was like, oh this is a man, he annoyed me a lot. Also the way the two of them part, making it seem like Thorn's fault, as if Emmett wasn't becoming unhinged and obsessive. Yuck.

The ending was fine, but predictable.

Again, I wish the Ben and Tom romance was more the focus, because I just love it when other people are gay. So this was a bit of a disappointment. Though I suppose that's not necessarily a fault of the book, just my preferences.
