"Why is here? Why is he wasting time on a mess like me? I think about telling him to leave. I think I should chase him away so he doesn't get wrapped up in my problems. But I don't. I guess I'm just too selfish. I don't want him to leave. Ever."

"Sometimes you do things that seem fine at the time because of.. love, or something."

"If you could take back one thing you've done in your life, do you know what it would be?"

"-none of it matters now. All that matters in the world is this moon. And Dari. And me."

"This is a moment. I want to remember this moment. Every detail, every sense. It's one of those moments in life that makes everything else worth it. One of those moments that feels like an eternity of bliss in one tiny bite of time. It's one of those moments that falls from some heavenly plane to remind you that life can be wonderful"
"Right before everything falls apart"

"Being with Kendra was like being with a distant star, and when she lost the distance he lost interest. Lily has no pretensions. She is who she is and nothing more or less than that. She's what he needs right now"

"I have an important question and I don't know the answer."

"I think I love too much. Then I cross it out and write: I think I love too hard. Then I sigh and cross out the words I think."

"You are worse because you knew I was broken and I trusted you"

"I love you too, Lily. Like I love thunder. I need it. And sometimes I need distance from it.

This book is so powerful and such a quick read. I wasn't ready for it to be over, and I'd love for Corthron to tell the aftermath of this story in another book. I have been in the periphery of this book's world for so long, and I had no idea. The subtleties, the nuances, the microaggressions that are part of my world that I have the privilege of choosing to ignore or confront hit me hard in this book.

Dari's struggle with the truth "I am an artist, I am a thinker, I am a person" is constantly in the background with the question he poses to Lily "Didn't you know I was born guilty?" I can't imagine living in this tension, but I am grateful for the unfortunate reality Corthron paints in this novel. As she reminded me so eloquently, "Honesty isn't easy. Or comfortable."

Here's to committing to having the honest and uncomfortable conversations and realizations that are needed now more than ever.

Thank you, Kara Lee Corthron!

This book was hard to rate. I did not care for any of the characters yet I wanted to see what happened. I skipped around a bit and got the the whole story but I hated the ending and felt it was left far too open.

I am on the fence with this. It is really well written and I think that Corthron developed her characters really well. I just have so much trouble when I find one of the main characters really unlikable. Lily deals with very real and very serious metal health issues, well saying she deals with them is a stretch. While completely understanding how depression and angry makes one apathetic and hard to connect with, I really struggled with Lily seeming to be, on top of the depression and anger, just a spoiled brat. I did really appreciate the raw honesty that the final pages give.

Let's just put it this way: I was given a free copy of this ebook for review and still couldn't motivate myself to finish it. It wasn't great and I was bored. I shelved it for almost a year and a half, but fuck it, I have better ways to spend my time.

I was already expecting the part where Dari get shot and the ending felt like you were stop in the middle of a story. But it make me tear up a bit lol.

Well it would be rated a one except the ending was pretty good except for the last paragraph which was also bad. The writing was weird.
