"Deserve? Who said this was a prize to be won? It is your duty! Frankly I feel sorry for you. It is an utterly terrible responsability

The titles and covers are amazing at making sure they don’t give away the story.

I think Kazu Kibuishi handled
SpoilerMax’s
character arch very well. Sympathetic villains are really hard (I speak from experience), and this was done amazingly.

This book also handled leadership very well. I think Riva made the right decisions, and I know that they would be very hard to do.

It got me super excited for the next book! Recommend for lovers of fantasy, sci fi, graphic novels, and Ben Hatke’s work.

Starting with the obvious: the illustrations and visuals in this book were beautiful… as they always are in this series. Not a ton to say on that, but I wanted it to be said. More specific to this book in particular, I loved that Kibuishi put the focus on Navin for this story. His plot line involved finding Lucien in an underground location, hunting for the beacon to help defeat the Elf King, and helping the citizens of Lucien escape the Shadows with his co-pilots Aly and Trish. I found all of this to be incredibly exciting and engaging. I was more invested in this plot line than any in recent memory from this series, so I loved that.

As a part of Lucien, we got to meet the elf mayor, Ravi. She was a fun new addition to the already large cast of characters in this series. She was a total badass who is ready and willing to go to any means necessary to protect her citizens, and those qualities makes me super excited to see what more we’ll see of her later on in the series.
