When it comes to the seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia series, I'd personally rank this one as the fifth best. Don't get me wrong; I truly appreciate the world-building and the way it fills in some plot holes. However, I can't help but feel that it could have been even better. At times, it seems like certain elements were added almost as an afterthought, not quite seamlessly fitting into the existing Narnia universe.

Interestingly, despite being chronologically the first book, it was actually the sixth to be written, and it had to work with a well-established world. If 'The Magician's Nephew' were a standalone work outside the Chronicles of Narnia series, I might have appreciated it even more, which is why I've given it a solid four-star rating. It's a unique entry in the series, different enough that I can't quite grant it a full five stars, but I can't deny that I love the story it tells. That's what keeps it comfortably above a three-star rating for me.

I have a generally complicated relationship with Narnia stuff in general, and this book frustrated me in a niche way the last time I read it, but Aslan looking at Uncle Andrew and saying "How cleverly you defend yourselves against all that might do you good" hits deep.

We'll ignore the Weird Stuff for now.
