I really enjoyed learning about Anne Lister's life. I think the author does a great job organizing the historical documents into a love story.

Intriguing, nicely paced biography. Felt like I was reading historical fiction all the way through which I loved, but also enjoyed the factual elements that dipped in and out the narrative. I was however disappointed by the end - the last 5/10 years of narrative are rapidly done.
The very sad end to both Anne's lives felt crammed and rushed, ruining the exciting narrative - completely anti-climatic! Because of this, I felt disappointed - underwhelmed and less emotional than I expected to be by the end.
Overall, however, a generally good, interesting read!

This read very much like an Austen novel with Elizabeth Bennett or Elinor Dashwood as a lesbian. And it's a true story! There is definitely a market for this. I've watched the 3 episodes of the show released so far, and though there are obvious differences, the general idea of the show is a good reflection of Anne Lister as portrayed in this book. The biggest quibble I have is there's a lot of lead-up to Anne's marriage, but not much after that. I would have liked some more detail about her life then. But all together I found this a fascinating read, and recommend for anyone interested in LGBTQ+ history (obviously), women's history, 19th century British history, or Austen fans in need of something a little more subversive.

A delightful book about a complex historic woman. I really appreciated that the author didn't shy away from Anne Lister's conservative views. The book mixes prose and excerpts from Lister's diary, crafting a unique narrative. A must-read for fans of the show and those interested in queer history.
