After falling head over heels for the TV show, I knew I had to learn more about the real Anne Lister.

I think the audiobook was definitely the way to go with this one as I don’t tend to read biographies. There was also a different narrator for parts when Anne’s diary entries were read which made the experience more accessible.

Being completely honest, I don’t think I could’ve just read Anne’s diary entries. It is interesting to a degree but I wouldn’t call it enjoyable. Nobody writes a diary to share with the world otherwise it wouldn’t be a diary. A diary is meant for you and your own catharsis not the entertainment of others. So it’s to be expected that it’s not going to be exciting all the time. Anne was very meticulous about recording everything. So while I appreciate her diaries from a historical perspective, they’re not the most exciting thing to read for pleasure. So I’m glad that the majority of the book was an actual biography that summed things up.

I’d only recommend this to those who are really obsessed with learning more about Anne Lister. It’s definitely not for the casual fan as the show is actually pretty accurate.

Just read the transcription. Anne Lister is a better writer than Anne Choma.

I loved the TV series, and this covers the same time period of the show, out of the many, many volumes in her diaries. It's a nice companion, going into more detail about the scenes of the show. It surprised me just how much the show kept true to real life - I found her honest conversations with her aunt particularly moving.

This book follows almost exactly the events of the TV show. To be honest, I was kind of disappointed with how quickly the 6 years leading up to Anne's untimely death were summarized and not really explored. I thought maybe the book would go more into depth about her life post-marriage to Ann (thus giving me a peek into next season), but ultimately I was left unsatisfied.

There were so many words I had to stop and look up - foreign phrases and archaic terms such as "pelisse" - that I really think the book could've done with a glossary or footnotes, something to help the reader out. But eh, I managed. The best parts of this book are Anne's diary excerpts, hands down. While I appreciated the historical context that Choma's comments gave, I can't help but think I would enjoy reading the actual diaries more (or at least a more advanced/detailed study of them). Anne Lister was an absolutely fascinating and singular woman, and I adored getting to know her in more detail.
