Good to know you can have a nervous breakdown and the right lesbian will still want to marry you, after first providing you with the most cutting-edge mental healthcare available! It would probably help to have a large fortune but a girl has to make do with what she’s got.

This was such a fun read! I've watched the TV show a couple of times and really enjoyed it, so when I saw that there's a biography that ties into the show, I had to pick it up. No regrets there. It starts off by going through a brief introduction of Anne's life leading up to the show, then it sets off from there. I didn't feel like I was reading a summary of each episode (which is how I felt with The Crown Volume 2), but like I was actually getting the historical basis for it and a grasp of what they made more dramatic and some things they left out. All I can say is that I'm really excited for season two, whenever it comes out, and that I hope they do another volume for the rest of it!
i picked this book up because i wanted to read it before checking out the tv show - only when i started reading did i realise it's all based on the life of a real woman! what an utterly incredible, inspiring, beautifully lesbian passage-way into the past. im gonna throw this into the face of every homophobe who says historical lgbt relationships "arent realistic". anne lister - what an absolute queer icon
I've not watched the show yet; I wanted to get some background before I did. I'm so glad I decided to read this. Wlw history is far and few in between, overwritten by heterosexism and shame. To be introduced to a figure so at liberty and at peace with her sexuality as Anne Lister was many things for me. It gave me some peace in my own identity, and an education in my identity that I wouldn't have gotten elsewhere.
Her life ended early, but there are so few stories where lesbian love ends well, so it brought me comfort, too. Though written as a biography, I found it just as enthralling as if it had been a novel. I was fascinated by Anne Lister's strengths and weaknesses, and while her weaknesses must be considered in the context of her time, culture, and situation, I believe her life and loves are to be exalted and remembered.

Interesting look at a very interesting woman. Personally would have liked more breadth and depth but I understand this is a TV tie in and was made to cover only a certain period of Anne Lister's life. Would like to read Anne's diaries one day to learn more about the woman in her own words.
