Loved this follow up after watching the show (which I also loved). Listened to this in a matter of just a few days. Great to have further detail and all of the diary entries along with seeing which parts were more or less altered for the show. I have really enjoyed learning about Anne Lister, and I'm sure I'll continue to read more about her.

Really interesting read! Especially as a companion to the show, it was cool to see what was and wasn't changed for the sake of TV.
I came to this book about halfway through watching the TV series. It made me appreciate the series more to find how accurate it is and of course love Anne Lister more. She was so audacious.
Special interests of mine in this text:
-all of her own diary entries
-all descriptions of her clothes
-seeing how very classist she was—incredible for her to be so progressive about gender and sexuality and yet continue to cling to patriarchal systems of trade and society; she’s so complex! (Her elitist self comes out very clearly in the show.)
I would love to explore more her theology around queerness. She so very clearly had a studied analysis of her selfhood, and carried a faith practice that was abundance about her queer identity; I would love to study her faith more to see her theological analysis. The book simply claimed that she had a strong faith and had decided early in life that she was not a sinful person in regard to her sexuality and gender presentation but I’d love to know in her own words how she worked that out. It would be additive to queer theology today I’m sure.

I thoroughly enjoyed this account of parts of the life of Anne Lister. The book follows mostly the order of the accompanying TV drama written by Sally Wainwright with guidance from Anne Choma. A fascinating insight into a Georgian woman's life. The stuff about her sexuality is interesting but the book is about far more than that. Makes you realise how much history has been written by and interpreted by men! Initially I wanted to read Anne Lister's diaries in their 'raw' state but now am glad I read this which interprets her (very complex) diaries for the modern reader (without ever being patronising). I am going to start using Anne Lister's expression 'potheration'! (Read bother for pother!)
