I read the original version because I wanted to listen to the audio book version when it was released this summer. It's a lovely Regency romance - no bodice-ripper if that's what you're looking for. The story is good and although you really know the outcome, it was fun to read anyway. I loved the audio book version much more even though it was abridged. While I missed some parts, I was amazed at how much I didn't miss. Normally, I don't like abridged versions but it worked for this novel. Also, the reader was sublime!
Other than being slightly weirded out that it almost felt that Georgette was writing fanfiction about herself, I absolutely adored this book. She can write such amazing and balanced characters with amazingly witty quips and dialogue. I loved Sylvester's confession scene. It was just so real and I really relate to who the two characters fall in love reluctantly. I understand why this book is often compared to pride and prejudice.
Don't even get me started on the narration of Richard Armitage I will never shut up about him.
Everytime I read a heyer novel it feels like reading the original good version of all the bad copies. With the man who made a pact to make the heroïne fall in love with him and the heroïne writing a book with him as the evil main character. It's over the top and a little extra but also silly and fun.
I've read this plot in other books before but not executed as well as this book. Sure it lacks the "spice" in modern historical romance, but instead it focuses on the relationship between these two people and making it realistic without the whole "forgetting common sense because you are so horny". Anyway not to but down all modern historical romance, I've read a lot I wholeheartedly enjoyed. But I feel it in my heart that those wouldn't have existed without Georgette Heyer.

Another of my favorite Heyer novels. Watching Phoebe attempt to keep Sylvester from figuring out that he was the inspiration for the villain in her new (and best-selling!) novel is hugely entertaining (and occasionally cringe-worthy).
Cute
This was a sweet book along the vein of pride and prejudice with some very funny moments but without the biting satire. A bit overlong but charming characters that are well developed.

This was probably the most romantic of all the Heyer novels I have read. The main characters were together most of the time and I really felt like they knew each other by the end of it, something a couple Heyer novels haven’t had. This was probably her least funny novel I’ve read so far. I mean, it was funny, but just not as much as the others I’ve read so far.
After I’d finished I was sad I wasn’t going to read about Sylvester again.

I highly recommend the audio version because it's read by Richard Armitage! As the cliche goes, he could read a phone book and I'd love it. Another fun, clean Georgette Heyer book. I did find after listening to the book, the audio version on Hoopla is abridged.
I listened to an abridged version and felt like I missed important plot points...
Want to re-read.

I listened to the unabridged audiobook version and I definitely recommend the narrator.
The secondary characters stole the show for me. I loved Tom, Nigel, little Edmund and Sylvester's mother.
I found Phoebe to be quite stubborn and foolish, I wasn’t a huge fan of her. Very rarely did she recognize her own faults and grow for them, whereas it was more clear that Sylvester had some character growth. It was easier for me to see the love Sylvester had for her, but I rarely saw any coming from Phoebe.
