I think this is my favourite Georgetter Heyer book.
Richard Armitage reading Georgette Heyer was just the escape I needed, however, I’m a little disappointed to learn that it was an abridged version. :/ I should have known by the length, i guess.
Reread it, and would do so again. The dowager duchess alone makes it worth it.
I love, love, love, LOVED this book. Sometimes Heyer’s heroines aren’t as well-developed as the male leads, but Phoebe may be my new favorite heroine! I thought it was particularly funny that she was a writer. The way the novel snowballs made me laugh more than once.
Speaking of well-developed characters, Sylvester was a gem. Carrying the loss of his brother with him makes him more than just a handsome rake who’s looking for a wife. The romance was sweet and I liked how the tension between Sylvester and Phoebe grew and changed
I also thought the supporting characters – Tom, Sylvester’s sister-in-law, the nurse, and little Edmond – were also a wonderful part of the story. Edmund had a couple funny one liners.
Are Heyer’s novels very deep or profound? Generally, not. Are they fun? Most definitely. Another thing I liked about this one was that it was pretty smart. “Cotillion” was one that was dumb rather than witty.
As a side note, there’s an audio book version of this novel where Richard Armitage reads it and I HIGHLY recommend it.

Started entertaining, and ended up with unsupportive family relationships and miscommunications and blundering into trouble and flinging the most toxic discourse between two leads
A fabulous Heyer regency novel. So much wit but not at the expense of deep emotion. As usual her characterisation is superb - the heroine, Phoebe, who isn't beautiful but who is clever and lively (when she isn't being intimidated by her ambitious stepmother); the hero, Sylvester, who is aloof and cold-blooded but always polite; the trusty young squire; the beautiful, vain, self-obsessed sister-in-law; an hysterically funny dandy, Sir Nugent Fotherby and a delightful young nephew.
I loved this book and have read it many times over the years but it never fails to engage me. One of the best!

Another thoroughly enjoyable book from Georgette Heyer. Humor, angst, romance, and a great cast of characters including a memorable hero and heroine - I really loved it.
