Have to put this away for awhile. The reputation trashing, false-witness bearing heroine isn't funny to me. She's just a person who is making judgments based on gossip and doesn't have enough strength (at this point in the novel) to own up to it. Too close to home. Try again in a year.

I have not read a Georgette Heyer in years - but her novels were some of my favourite reads ever growing up. It took quite a while to get back into her writing style - long sentences, strange words and language and seriously long chapters ! But once Phoebe was introduced the story took hold and became quite an enjoyable romp. Great characters - especially the two older women who contrive to get just what they set out to do !
This is perfect for fans of Pride and Prejudice. I found this story to be entertaining and funny. I didn’t think I could laugh so much at a Regency Era romance
Just got the audio book of this, but it won't let me categorise it separately from the book. The audio book is mine, the book belongs to my sister. I've read the book, and I'm currently listening to the audio book.
Even though it's abridged (which is an abomination), I'd recommend the audio book. Richard Armitage does a magnificent job of performing the book. It takes some doing for a bloke to come up with so many distinct female voices, but it's always clear who's talking. The fact that his own speaking voice turns me to jelly doesn't hurt either.

This book has the best flubbing of a marriage proposal outside of a Jane Austen novel. The best. This is the second Georgette Heyer novel I have read, and I love the Austen feel to her writing. I love the wit and the social commentary that is weaved throughout the story. The bonus for this audio version is that it is read by the great Richard Armitage. Delightful! I always feel like I need to go back and re-read the Heyer stories that I have read so far. I just know that I am missing some of the subtle details that really make these stories pop. I think that Sylvester would be a fun story to see on screen somewhere. I enjoyed this audio book, and I feel like it is a story that I could come back to again and find that I love even more the second time around, so I'm keeping this on my book radar so I don't forget it. This may be the lamest book review I have ever written. I don't feel like I have much of value to say about this novel except that I give it four stars. I really liked it. If you are looking for fun, sweet, and clean historical romances, this is what you need to read.
