I finally got around to reading this classic! Poor Alexander made me both laugh and sympathize with him. Who hasn't wanted to leave all the dumb things in life and move to Australia a time or two?

It's been a while since I've read this book. Seems like I didnt like it when I read it. Can't remember what the book was about though. Guess it didn't make an impression on me.

Summary: As Alexander's day progresses, he faces a day full of incidents that make him crabby. Some of the incidents include: getting smushed in the middle seat of the car, a dessertless lunch sack, a cavity at the dentist's office, stripeless sneakers, and every young child's worst fear, witnessing kissing on television! When he feels like his life is full of hard times, he says he wants to move to Australia.

Characters: Alexander and his two older brothers, Anthony and Nick, (based on Viorst's own three sons of the same names)

Genre: Fiction

Audience: Ages 4-8

Life Lessons: Even when you think you are having a bad day, someone else has one just as bad! Life is too short to be worried about the little things that upset Alexander in this book.

Curriculum Use: Independent reading or read aloud

Recommendations/Awards: ALA Notable Children's Book

Publisher: Atheneum (July 15, 1987)

My son didn't love this book. I'm not sure why not. We'll have to try it again.

Viorst, Judith, and Ray Cruz. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. New York: Atheneum, 1972. Print.

My mom always mentions this book but I haven't read it since I was too small to remember.

This book addresses how to have bad days. It talks about having bad days, and that it's okay to be sad or grumpy. I think this book fits best for smaller children but is applicable forever. Children and adults both enjoy reading this because it is comical, but also teaches a lesson.
