Love Chris and his YouTube. Recently becoming an expat myself, felt like the right time to give it a read. Fun read.

I’d read Chris’ shopping list tbf

Preferred the first half where he describes his new life in Sakata: teaching, making friends, discovering the country and its quirks... Second half is focused too much on his YT career imo, but I suppose it gives some nice behind the scenes details to long time fans of the channel.

Great for the first two thirds - an interesting look into Japanese life and how to integrate into a culture more successfully. The last third was more about making YouTube videos which I found much less enjoyable.
adventurous funny informative inspiring fast-paced

Some funny and interesting stories, but the pacing is a bit off and the structure changes abruptly about halfway through.

I’ve been watching the Abroad in Japan since the early days and so having Chris narrate the audiobook with his trademark humour and delivery made it almost unpauseable as he recounts his time moving to rural Japan to teach English and becoming a YouTuber. It not only serves to highlight the wonders of Japan but as a reminder to get out of one’s comfort zone and take the opportunities that life throws at you.
