It is never the dog's fault! Very useful book that also highlight the pitfalls in amorphism. A must read for new owners.

Dogs do not know what is good and bad. They only know what is safe and dangerous.
That was the key takeaway from this book that I got. Donaldson focuses on dog behaviours, and how positive reinforcement is the key to an obedient and happy dog.
I felt like this was a good all-around manual to raise your canine. It starts off quite fascinating, explains how they perceives things vs human expectations. It does however, become monotonous towards halfway, at which point it was so easy to tune out to the audiobook. More or less similar advice from different modern dog trainers.

Some of the information feels dated and things got a little preachy here and there - but there was quite a bit that was worth the time of listening to - and a couple exercises I am going to go back into - in print and run through with my dog.

I have a sensitive dog. She is terrified of the world and reactive because of it. I've spent a lot of money on training and trying to make sure she can be comfortable in the world. This book along with other resources has helped me see that she is struggling but as long as I am understanding and taking the necessary precautions she can be helped. My only real critique is the 'no reward signal'. My girl is so sensitive that even a 'no' or 'ah ah' seems to be aversive to her. Doing that too many times outside where she is already terrified to go is just another thing to add to the 'outside bad' mentality for her when I really just want her to be ok to go outside for a potty. However, she is obviously a special case in this instance so I understand that this method would most likely work for other pups.
Si hay algo que odio en este tipo de libros es que llegue el autor-adiestrador y diga que un perro no puede hacer tal cosa en concreto porque como desde su perspectiva y experiencia nunca ha sido testigo de esa capacidad en ninguno de los perros que ha observado y adiestrado, ningún perro en la faz de la tierra es capaz de hacerlo. No sé bajo qué criterios afirma tan categóricamente según qué cosas (y me resulta curioso que esté respaldada por otros profesionales renombrados), pero según Donaldson, mi Zoquete no puede existir, o si lo hace, es único en el mundo, porque yo le he visto hacer cosas que según ella es imposible que pueda hacer.
Bien, vale, puedo vivir con ello.
No obstante, al margen de estos detalles, el libro debería ser lectura obligada para todos aquellos que tengamos o quieran ampliar su familia con un perrete. Tal vez esté escrito con un tono un tanto agresivo para el lector, pero, sinceramente, a veces se oyen tantas estupideces de supuestos profesionales que es necesario que llegue alguien y les dé la proverbial hostia en la boca para callarlos.
Dependiendo de los conocimientos que se tengan sobre el tema, es más o menos fácil de entender. A veces las explicaciones son un poco rebuscadas, y no nos olvidemos que a pesar de la revisión que le dieron hace unos años, es un libro escrito originalmente en 1997, ha llovido mucho desde entonces y tiene alguna cosilla un poco oxidada. Pero en general es eso, un libro recomendable al que acudir tanto si se tiene un perro cachorro o adulto como para enseñarles educación y para evitar posibles futuros problemas.
