This was fine, though I could definitely tell it was written quite a long time ago. There were a few too many characters and some of them weren't fleshed out enough for them to be significant. Even so, this was just as convoluted as some of the books I read nowadays.
Just ok. Some of the language is a little dated.
I’d probably like this better as a movie…
this may be a children’s book but it kept me guessing the whole time! the narration switches from heir to heir quickly with no discernment and seems to state their opinions as fact which may be part of how it kept the reveal hidden through so many twists and turns

This is technically a reread. I read this book in elementary school. That was a while ago, but I remember liking it then, and I like it now. It probably is clouded by some nostalgia, but ehhh.
I had a pretty hard time getting a grip on everything happening in this book. There's a large cast and a lot to unpack about them. This doesn't make them unlovable, but just hard to keep track of. Because there were so many suspicions and avenues for the mystery to unfold, I did find myself losing details that would have likely helped in mystery solving. The clues are also inside and twisted around themselves, which makes for a very convoluted trail. I'm surprised if anyone figured it out in the first read, because what the hell?
That being said, I was just as shocked as the cast when the mystery was solved. It's not what I expected because of how out-of-this-world impossible it seems. There were most definitely cues, but none that I picked up on.
Despite my issues with this book, it's charming in the way I find adult novels are, but with the ease of a younger audience. This is mentioned in the editor's note, and I couldn't agree more. It's a notion that kids are not a fact, "more stupid" than adults, rather than that they operate differently with the limited and different experiences they have. That is what allows them to grow. It's something I appreciated as a kid (getting to understand a more "adult" book, and now, that I had the experience of reading it then and revising it now with a different viewpoint).

I think when I was younger I liked this book but after reading Agatha Christie I have higher standards for mysteries. There were parts that were witty but far too many characters and not much character development so difficult to follow.

This is such a fun and intricate mystery. It had me so confused with all the people and the events for so long and then it all came together in a very interesting way.
