I listened to this one as an audiobook and it is stunningly beautiful, the words lyrical and the voice talent could not have been more perfect. Hearn has a breathtaking way with words that kept me captivated. While I occasionally feel my mind wander with most audiobooks, this one kept my attention rapt and I finished it much sooner than I did with other audiobooks of similar length. I highly recommend this book, even as a cross-genre read.
I really enjoyed this book! The pacing was the first thing I noted. A lot happens very quickly and it keeps going like that all the way through, which I really enjoyed as it kept me hooked. I really connected with the main characters, and really got drawn into the world. My one complaint would be the amount of events toward the end of the book that happen 'off screen' that the main characters are only told about afterwards. But that's only a small complaint. This was a brilliant book and I'm excited to read the rest of the series!
I think what I found so intensely frustrating about this book is that it went for a story that felt like a legend, with the logic of a legend, but wrote it out in character POV like a novel, which gave me different expectations. I wanted things to play out under different rules of logic. As an epic tale, though, I can appreciate it more.
I’m sorry, but the amount of death and sacrifice in this book is ridiculous - the maid of the main character says that they will die together after knowing each other for a very short amount of time - ummmm?? Not very realistic and that kind of ruined it for me. Death was cheapened by the fact that everyone was willing to die for someone they just met!

Love all of this. Beautiful story, stunning scenery and a fantastical world. An easy read, but well written and a real escapist novel.
