I had to check several times that this was really a YA novel. Aside from the love-at-first-sight, all-consuming romance and the teenage protagonists, this felt nothing like a YA novel. It is brutal. It is [b:A Game of Thrones|13496|A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)|George R.R. Set in a fantastical version of feudal Japan, Hearn has meticulously researched the period and used it to craft a vibrant, fully-realized world. Set in the Three Countries, a vicious warlord, Iida Sadamu, has establishe dominance among the samurai families. Tomasu lives a peaceful life with his mother, stepfather, and younger sisters among the Hidden (a persecuted monotheistic religious group clearly analogous to Christians), until the day he returns from exploring the mountains to find his village burning and his family slaughtered by Iida's men. He is rescued by Lord Shigeru of the Otori, and becomes fiercely loyal to him. Lord Shigeru wants to assassinate and overthrow Iida Sadamu for the death of his brother, and Takeo makes this mission his own. Tomasu (now renamed Takeo) discovers that he has magical powers (including super hearing) from his biological father, a member of the Tribe (analogous to ninjas) that will help him assassinate Iida. But the Tribe feels ownership over Takeo, and has its own plan.

There is betrayal, political manuevering, and forbidden love. No one is safe and Hearn is not afraid of killing her characters.

This was a stunning, complex book but I am not sure if I can finish the trilogy because I don't know if my heart can take any more.
