'Lady Mechanika: La Dama de la Muerte' by Joe Benitez and M. M. Chen finds herself in Mexico after suffering a loss, and finds a way to grieve and remember.

Lady Mechanika finds herself in a small village in Mexico on the verge of celebrating Dia de los Muertos. She learns the tradition from a family that has lost loved ones. She even dons some skeletal makeup even though her heart is breaking.

The celebration is cut short by Jinetes del Infierno, or Hell Riders, who hold the villages ransom and demand young children from villages that can't pay up. Lady Mechanika decides to do something about this injustice.

I've read a few volumes of this series and liked them, but it felt like things really clicked with this story. I loved the art and the story wasn't bad either. This was worth waiting for.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from Benitez Productions, Diamond Book Distributors, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

This short story was fantastic! It was unique and respectful of a beautiful ceremony from the Spanish and Mexican cultures. It was also a great insight into Lady Mechanika's backstory, which makes me want to know more about her past. The story was the most emotional thus far, and doesn't shy away from gut punches. It featured Lady Mechanika at one of her fiercest and finest. It was also GORGEOUS--so many beautiful colours and designs. You can really see the hard work and dedication the authors and artists created. I'm becoming more and more in love with this steampunk series and want it to keep going for forever!

Pretty interesting story, gorgeous as always. Although I have to admit I was a little lost as to who Dallas specifically was. But it was interesting regardless.

This could have been a super simple action plot and it still would have been beautiful and awesome. Instead we got some culture, a hint of magic, some action and a couple cool plot twists AND it was beautiful. Whoever came up with the idea for Benitez to draw some Day of the Dead type stuff deserves an award.

I received this book to review for free from NETGALLEY in exchange for an honest review. All the opinions shared are my own and are my honest feelings regarding this book. If you know me I am not one to mix my words simply because something was free. These are my feelings on the book, both the good and the bad. So lets begin!!!

Central Theme:

The central theme of this particular graphic novel should be self-evident, but just in case you need a clue: DEATH! I mean come on, her friend died, she is at the festival for the dead, Demon Riders, DEATH DEATH DEATH. ;) It also is about coming to terms with loss, coming to terms with parts of your own life, and ultimately about making sure evil people get what the heck is coming to them.

My Feelings:

I had heard of "Lady Mechanika" in passing because I used to love to read comic books. When I saw this as a "read now" on NetGalley I was like, "Oh, This could be fun." It wasn't fun, IT WAS GOOD! No, let me be more clear: This was a great graphic novel. The artwork was superb. Don't believe me? You doubt my reviewing skills on this artwork? BE SCHOOLED:

This mini-series has a slightly different tone and setting from what we've seen before, and I'm still deciding exactly how I feel about the detour. However, the core elements of the series remain, and there is some excellent character work throughout the story--in addition to excellent art and the engaging steampunk style. A satisfying continuation of Lady Mechanika's adventures.

A dark and spooky seasonal read, this volume of Lady Mechanika feels like a bit of a side quest from the rest of the storyline but it was enjoyable…in a really grim kind of way.
