This was my first experience with Manga novel and I can say that is was a great experience. Overall, I thought the illustration was good but nothing amazing. I felt the story line dragged on a big in the beginning but towards the middle to the end it really picked up nicely. It wasn't my favorite read but I might pick up the next novel to the series.

The first book in an 18 volume series and an introduction to the unfortunate Dr. Tenma and the one patient he shouldn't have ever bothered saving.

Awesome and very, very intense from start to finish.

Me dijeron que este tenía una onda a Death Note (que amo amo amo) y ya tenía el primer tomo así que lo empecé nomás. Pinta estar bueno, y como hace mil años que no leo manga voy a darle una oportunidad.

If I would choose to only read one manga in my entire life, it would be Monster. It's fricking awesome. 15 years later and I still haven't read anything that's as good.

Naoki Urasawa, Monster: Herr Dr. Tenma (ViZ, 1995)

This is a volume of setup, but it's the kind of setup that shows that Urasawa had a strong sense of where the story was going from day one, and the more I read manga, the more rare I find out that is.

Herr Dr. Tenma introduces us to Kazuo Tenma, a promising young doctor (who bears more than a slight resemblance to Black Jack) who left Japan, where his outlook was bleak, for a more promising career path in Germany. He finds himself unwilling, and ultimately unable, to cope with hospital politics, however, when he is given the choice between saving the young son of an obscure East German official who fled to West Germany not long before and saving the Mayor of Dusseldorf. The choice he makes turns out to have consequences beyond any he thought it would, however.

An excellent beginning to what promises to be an exciting series. Hopefully I'll get the next few books soon. ****

This is actually a reread, but I don't remember when I first read it – probably in 2007 or 2008. This series is one of the few mangas I kept around from my anime/manga-obsession days. I decided to start re-reading it on a whim today!

An all-around great series. Intricate plot with lots of twists and turns and unexpected happenings.
