I am leaving this review as an overall review of the entire Monster manga. I absolutely loved this, there is a reason this is considered Urosawa's best work. A interwoven plot slowly unwinds itself to shocking revelations about the fall of Communism, espionage, murder, and philosophy. There are a large number of characters, but each is memorable and distinct and I always felt like I had a good handle on who was who. A modern Sherlock Holmes tale.

Fast-paced and often melodramatic, this combines a mystery with a medical drama, and a dollop of pretty heavy handed social commentary. The real hook is the mystery though, seeing him being groomed by the head of hospital and his daughter was not nearly as interesting as the mysterious deaths and strange twins saved by him, which go missing.

Every aspect of it leans into the melodrama, however, so if you’re not keen on that, probably move on. Even the quirky detective has a strange bent to him. His Sherlock-esk memory palace seems to be stored in a muscle memory type way, where he imagines himself typing on a computer, his fingers twitching during conversations, as he is able to recall or put down information in his “files”.

yes im in a reading slump which i supplement with manga
yes this counts
yes i read other manga to justify adding this but this was the biggest and most classic that i feel like i will remember
this was truly what i wish books had these days, the layers and connections without being convoluted or made up just to be made up. it was such a captivating read after i got used to the art and im glad i was recommended it.

Excellent dark psychological thriller, a deep plot with unpredictable twists and complex characters. It does literally get you on the edge of your seat. No magic, no spaceships, no giant robots. I actually got my mother hooked on this.

Amazing first volume. Starts off fairly innocuously but almost right off the bat, there's an edge of menace to the story. How things develop to the climax are exciting and unexpected. Great art, Urasawa is a master of facial expression. While the book is not gory, it's certainly heavy and dark. I appreciate the consistent tone in this book, though I'm a bit daunted by the length of the series.
