Watched the anime way back and I was struck by how much I remember most of the parts! I decided to read this manga in its original Japanese to compare and I was not disappointed.

Roughly the story shown in the anime stayed true to the manga.  We are introduced to Dr Tenma, a highly skilled surgeon who was working in a German hospital. After yet another miraculous surgery, he was assigned to take care of one famous singer. He was able to perform the surgery successfully but after he was done, he was confronted by an immigrant family at the hospital accusing him of murder!

He later found out that he was initially assigned to operate on a case involving a Turkish immigrant as the patient arrived first and badly needed medical attention. However, the hospital management decided to reassign Tenma’s surgery once they received a call from the famous singer because of his influence. Unsurprisingly (but disappointingly all the same) the hospital prioritised its reputation as well as money because comparing the two patients, the immigrant would bring nothing ‘good’ to the hospital as he not only came from a poor immigrant background (racism) but he was also a nobody (no wealth or influence to his name).

Unfortunately, the immigrant did not receive his surgery in time and passed on. Struck by the accusation of the immigrant’s family, Dr Tenma was reminded of his initial reason to become a doctor and how he had forgotten it along the way. Feeling guilty, he talked to his fiancé and she casually remarked – not all lives are equal.

Affected by Eva’s nonchalant but ruthless reply, Dr Tenma decided to go rogue and defied his superior’s orders. Unfortunately for him, it was a decision he would come to regret later, after he unwittingly saved someone who would turn into a monster..

The story was so interesting it is still something I think about from time to time. If you were a doctor and bound by the Hippocratic oath, would you still save someone you know would be up to no good once they regain their health? Do you think all lives are created equal?

Monster had always lived on my mind rent-free and I know it always will for years to come. I’m really enjoying revisiting the world created by Urasawa Naoki, especially now that I can enjoy it in its original Japanese. I highly recommend this series whether in manga or anime! The storyline is just too good!!

the first time i tried to read this book, it was a total failure and couldn’t get pass the first page. the second time around, i would say i am definitely intrigued but i just don’t like the fact that ‼️‼️‼️‼️very minor spoiler ‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
we know who the “monster” is from the first volume. i didn’t expect that and that has lessened my excitement for the rest of the volumes :(.

not going to go and rate every volume but I finished this last night after dedicating two whole days and one whole night to finishing this masterpiece and i just need to praise naoki urasawa's brilliant mind

honestly i don't really read manga, I've attempted many times but can never get into the story - this did not happen with monster. i was immediately hooked once i started and the slow reveal and endless plot twists were just..genius. also nina, tenma, and johan were written so well and even the minor/supporting characters were fleshed out really nicely

all in all, definitely recommend

September 2023. The first volumes of a famous thriller manga series about a doctor who performs lifesaving brain surgery on a child, only to later find out he’s grown up to be a serial killer. The doctor feels responsible for him living to become what he has and tries to find him to stop him.

This was excellent! Highly recommend! I’ve read Vol 1-4 and am waiting to get more from the library. Absolutely has earned its classic status from what I’ve read so far. I’m done with 4/18 so far so I’m very excited to see what twists and turns are coming down the road for it.

Naoki Urasawa’s Monster (Vol 1-4).
