Hopeless

Colleen Hoover

4.05 AVERAGE

Wow- this was addicting as hell.
It had some issues but nothing surprising. It's a Colleen Hoover book anyways.
As I read somewhere, 'Reading a CoHo book is like crossing the road by checking both the sides and then getting hit by an airplane'.
I kept forgetting that the protagonist is seventeen years old.

I've read this book two times now, and it still has a powerful hold on me when I turn the last page. All throughout the book, Colleen Hoover drags her readers down under, and doesn't let them back up for air until the very end.

Sky, a 17 year old adopted girl, is quite content with her life - without technology, without many friends, without public school, without feelings. She hooks up with guy after guy, but feels absolutely nothing, as she stares up at her ceiling full of stars. That is, until her best friend and next door neighbor, Six, pushes her to go to public school and then leaves her to study abroad in Italy. She's forced to start her senior year, by herself, that is until she meets Breckin, a Mormon, who befriends her into an allegiance to take over the school (ha, not literally). Everything changes though, when she meets Holder in a grocery store, and becomes captivated. They connect on a level they had never imagined possible, but with such closeness, comes the truth, and when Sky hears such a horrid truth, her memories of her childhood before she was adopted come flooding back.

When I read this book the first time, I had a feeling I knew what was going to happen, but I had no idea. It unfolds perfectly, and I found myself feeling for Sky, and wishing that the relationship she has with Holder can survive each truth that she hears.

The ending was perfect, and I don't think this book could have been written any better than it was. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a heartfelt love story.

Why is Dean Holder so perfect?? I loved this story. It was emotionally poignant, sweetly romantic, and charmingly humorous. This was my first Colleen Hoover book, and it still remains my favorite of hers. I love revisiting this book because it never fails to affect me. Like Sky and Holder, you never forget your first love.

"Good books don't give up all their secrets at once." ~Stephen King

I thought of this quote more than once while reading Hopeless. From my initial expectations, over what this book started out to be, to what it turned out by the last page-we've gone a long way together and I'm glad to attest to the fact that it is a very good book.

The first few chapters raised a red flag or two; I just don't like the brooding stalkerish emo hot guy character who, more often than not, doesn't have any reason to act the way he does besides being a a-hole. Not Dean Holder. His concern for Sky was sweet and genuine. It was incredible to watch him picking her up time after time as the past comes to catch up on them. There's this sentence in the summary that bothers me: " Sky soon finds that Holder isn’t at all who he’s been claiming to be." Misleading? It's the reason why I expected that the story would go in another direction. So glad it didn't.

This book is carefully constructed so that it's impossible to see the full picture until the end, when all the pieces fall together. If you think you know what the big secret is (I assume, if you've read some reviews, you already know), I'm sure you're in for a few surprises. The full extent of it comes to show at the end. There are consequences for almost every character involved, and I suppose that is my favorite part of this book. Consequences, people. No cop-outs that drive me insane, but tackling the issue from every angle, with honesty and sincerity.

I love a good CoHo book. Her writing just sucks you in. I can’t wait to finish the rest of the series this week

I probably would’ve finished this book in one sitting if I didn’t have plans that got it the way. In classic CoHo fashion, I was hooked from the start. However it was predictable. I do love how she takes these really dark situations for her characters and shows how they get through it.

Fantastic! Very moving story and lovable characters.

"Good. Because you're the only girl I've ever had the urge to love."
This book took so many different turns. I fell in love with the complex characters are the story evolved. I am so proud of sky and the trauma she has gone through and lived through. This book was amazing and written so beautifully. Everything made sense and pieced together in the end.

I am honestly shocked that this book is rated at nearly 5 stars. The story was interesting, but this might as well have been a fantasy book. All it missed was the dragons and elves. The characters were completely unbelievable and so were the way they lived and the way they spoke to each other. I guess Holder is the guy that every girl wants, but he is a fantasy being, not a character in a fiction novel. It was like a god amidst mortals. Also, things moved way too fast with their relationship. I was surprised by the twist in the story, but I like my fiction to be more realistic than my fantasy.

wow...i don't think i could have picked a more depressing book to start the new year with. i think hoover does a good job of developing the characters and when the big reveal comes i didn't see that coming at all. course it just seems to get worse and worse from there and you get to the point of worrying "does anyone come back from all that drama?!"
