woah✨
if you think you're mentally prepared you're not

I wasn't sure how i would feel about this book as it is from the perspective of a teenager, but i really enjoyed it and tried my best not to read it all in one sitting. I am usually pretty good about guessing where the plot will lead, but there were some things that really surprised me and made it nearly impossible to put down. Don't let the fact that its about a teenager fool you, there is some adult content and material, but if you're fine with that then definitely give it a go! Another amazing Colleen Hoover book!

I absolutely loved this book . I was hooked and couldn't put it down

couldn't put it down! not what I was thinking it would be when I first picked it up. Colleen tears at my heart and takes me on a roller coaster with every book of hers I have picked up.

This book transported me back to Wattpad in 2012, but to reading an understandably popular story  there with a fully committed author who goes BIG. It's cheesy and cliche, but the heavy topics and sex keeps it engaging.

The romance/sex was probably the element that I found most uncomfortable/strange--firstly the male love interest (Holder) is SO stereotypical brooding love interest that my eyes were rolling. He has ABS, guys. Hot sexy steamy abs. And he does all the brooding bad boy cliche's, holding her like "Who did this to you?" when she accidentally gets a black eye. His violent tendencies, mood swings, forcefulness, and unwillingness to just communicate things at certain times was a red flag for me, but he's constructed as a love interest more than a person, so it's easy to brush off.

What's more wild to me is the way the main couple seems to make out or fuck after the most upsetting or even TRAUMATIZING situations... I suspect it's intended as a proxy for intimacy/comfort, but the vibe I got was just that they are down to get horny after experiencing/seeing even the most horrific things that like, I personally might want a little time to cool-off from before getting frisky with someone. There were one or two sections where it was clearly a trauma response situation, but the others that occur and are presented as the right thing to do in the situation, and come so soon after harrowing events/revelations that they made me as a reader feel gross.

When the uncomfortable sex was on purpose, though, I appreciated the detail and particulars. I was fascinated by Sky's disconnect from her sexuality, and the way she wanted to make out with random guys while also feeling completely numb while doing so (and LIKING that numb feeling)--I enjoy a complicated relationship with sex/romance, and I found her response a nuanced take with some meat to dig into.

Although some things were ridiculous, and the attempts at #deep revelations and lessons relayed directly from the characters' mouths were on-the-nose... Ultimately I was pretty engaged the whole time I was reading. This is popcorn--quick, digestible, but it's popcorn bursting with flavor.

Note for modern readers considering picking this up: This was published in 2012, and includes an EXTREMELY stereotypical gay best friend (positive for 2012, a bit cringe to read in 2025) and some acephobia (in the form of Sky being worried and accused of being "broken" for not being attracted to anyone until meeting Holder).

Wow. Recently, I have read a bunch of predictable books...I'm not saying they weren't good, just that they were predictable. This book wow'ed me twice. I totally did not expect what happened either time and I absolutely loved that. I gave it five stars (it might be more of a 4.5 star book) so that everyone I know has a chance to read a book that wows them. I felt a connection to the characters and I loved the maturity the main character shows in certain points- no whiny drama coming from her.

This started off a little slow for me, but then I became hooked. I love Sky and Six friendship,I wish that we could’ve had more of it! I love the way Holder and Sky connect and how they’re there for one another. Let me just say I did not see that twist coming!!! This book had me laughing and at one point I wanted to cry. Pieces of my heart broke. Triggered warning: suicide and sexual abuse.
