Hopeless

Colleen Hoover

4.05 AVERAGE

Classic guilty pleasure Colleen read. Never fails.

This book needed to have several trigger warnings on it. The subject matter was way too heavy for a a contemporary romance. For the first half of the book, I was uneasy with the actions of Holder (all eventually explained but still…) and Sky’s reaction to him was off-putting and concerning. I would not say I enjoyed the book exactly, but I rated it 3 stars because I HAD to find out what happened. I don’t think I will be continuing with this series.

I would say to "buckle up" before you read this, but that wouldn't be enough to prepare you for the rollercoaster this book is about to take you on. Think Kingda Ka at Six Flags NJ mixed with Fahrenheit at Hersheypark. Make sense yet?

I'm ashamed that it has taken me this long to finish a book since having my Kindle Paperwhite, but it's that point in the semester where almost all your hobbies are seemingly pointless until the stress is over until the spring semester starts. Then repeat the cycle. I'm trying to make reading into a permanent habit, but ADD and school always seem to get in the way.

I feel like I shouldn't give away anything about this book because I went into it almost blind and I think that's what others should do. I will say this, and it's going to come out corny any way I word it: It's about a girl who meets a boy, secrets are uncovered, and her entire life turns upside down. Colleen Hoover is known for her immense plot twists, but according to avid readers of hers, this one takes the cake. Which is part of the reason why I'm giving it five stars.

Trigger warnings for child abuse, sexual abuse, suicide, guns, alcoholism, sexual assault, bullying, kidnapping, rape, and death of a parent. Yes, it's a lot, which is why I included them, but please don't let this deter you from reading the book. For my first Colleen Hoover, this was so much better than I had ever imagined. Will definitely be reading more from her in the future.

TW: sexual assault, child SA, suicide, childhood trauma, grief, and kidnapping

Parts of this book were fine but much of it was highly silly and ridiculous despite very tough topics. Otherwise the revelations throughout were quite predictable! Why fit soooo much into one novel? Of course I’ll read the rest of the series…

Very powerful message about choosing the right answer even though both are wrong!

Loved the first half, however the second half was very intense!

This was a well written story. It was interesting and kept my attention to the end. The reason for 3 stars is because ratings are a personal choices and personally, I just only liked it.

The book deals with tough subject matter that is all so prevalent in today's society. High school is tough anyway but to add additional layers of drama makes it for some almost unbearable. I am not a fan of high school drama, or young-adult books so for me I just liked it.

This was not what I was expecting! I needed a book about forgetting and this was the perfect choice! CoHo had this amazing ability to completely suck you into a book and love all the characters and sympathize with the bad guys… like seriously how!!
I’m usually CoHo fashion, she doesn’t take the easy way out with this book and really makes you grow with Sky! I’m so glad about that… where it was tough to read at times because of the content, it’s necessary.
Highly recommend
