Every book I have read by this author I have devoured in 24 hrs not this time. The first two hundred and so pages was about a girl and boy having insta love.
Thankfully this author returned to writing about a real life issue. The last 200 pages turned quickly as Sky remembers her childhood and how she reconcile it with her current life.

BOOK REVIEW
Hopeless By Colleen Hoover (4.5/5)
So this book took me by complete surprise because I was expecting to read a cute romance but this book was so much more than that.
SYNOPSIS:
This book follows Sky who has been homeschooled and has lived a very sheltered life. She convinces her mother to allow her to attend a public school. Here she meets Dean Holder who both terrifies her and captivates her. There is something about him that sparks memories of her past. A past which she would rather stay buried.
MY THOUGHTS:
This book was very raw. I could feel what Sky was feeling, I could feel her sense of loss, her numbness, right from the beginning I could tell that Sky had a heartbreaking past and was broken by it. I am not the biggest fan of high school romances unless it’s done really well but CoHo did it yet again. Will I ever not like her books? I don’t think so!
Holder, sweet sweet Dean Holder, like all of CoHo’s male characters (except Ryle) I was a fan. There was so much depth to his character, just like Sky you could feel his sense of loss.
Now on to the story itself. There was a plot twist, I don’t know I never guess it right and when the pieces of the puzzle were put together, I was so sad for these characters. It took me a while to digest it all because it was a lot and as I said I walked into this book blind, so just warning you, prepare yourself. This wasn’t a cute romance story, this is heartfelt story and this book was so sad from start to finish. This is a heavy story about finding hope in a story that appears to be hopeless. This book is powerful. Again CoHo delivers a message through this book. These characters felt real and I will always remember them.

4.5 stars *
This was my second or third re-read of Hopeless (can’t remember the exact number) and I wanted to re-read it because I haven’t recorded my review or thoughts on it before - but I loved it just as much as I did the first time I read it!
I couldn’t really remember too much of what happened in the story so I was basically going into it new again - I did remember vaguely some parts but it really blew me away and definitely makes me want to check out more of Colleen Hoover’s books! I loved her style of writing and how real and raw the emotions were from Sky & Dean along with the other characters.
I loved Sky as a main character - she’s so brave, kind, caring & such an interesting main character to follow. I was rooting for her from the beginning.
Before I go into much detail about my thoughts (this is a spoiler warning!), I just want to highlight some trigger warnings beforehand - a trigger warning of topics including rape, sexual assault, suicide, child abuse/rape, alcohol abuse/drunken behaviours, kidnap. There are also some other trigger warnings including violence (including violence towards a gay character - I think it was mentioned that the character involved didn’t know the other character was gay) - just a warning.
I really felt for Sky when I found out how her father abused her - and how, although she closed that section of her memories off at the beginning of the book, she still feels numbness & unease at having sex with boys as a seventeen year old. I felt she was a well developed, mature character and I saw character growth from her - I appreciated that she wasn’t that immature teen & that she thought about her actions and consequences etc. I loved her friendship with Six & would liked to have seen how this pans out - I can’t remember if the sequel/companion novel addresses this more (I’ll have to read it again to find out!) but I do feel it was left a little bit to the side. I do understand how towards the end of the novel everything about Sky’s past is the focus and I’m assuming her friendship with Six was still solid enough at the end of the book - it wasn’t suggested otherwise and Six had only been gone a couple of months anyway.
I did feel to begin with that Sky’s relationship with Holder was a bit insta love - but then as the story progressed and I found out that they had been childhood friends (before Karen took Sky), I didn’t mind the insta love as much because there had been a solid connection to begin with.
Holder was a character I grew to love - he had his flaws and reasons for his up and down moods. I wanted to give him a hug, as he was clearly struggling to deal with his twin’s suicide and feelings of guilt from that. I felt he was a well rounded character who really cared deeply about Sky & put her needs infront of his time & time again. I would have liked more scenes where Sky & Dean were just hanging out as friends - sometimes I felt the romance was focused on heavily and it would have been nice to have seen them just hanging out as friends too but this was just a personal preference of mine. I felt Dean was also a mature character who knew his boundaries with Sky - I felt as the story progressed, he grew and was able to handle his emotions towards Sky’s father and the kid in the cafeteria too - with Sky’s help, showing that they both needed each other for support in their own ways. Holder was caring, loving (or “living” - if you know, you know!), passionate and supportive towards Sky - and now I need to find my own Dean Holder because he is now one of my favourite book boyfriends

I probably shouldn’t have loved this book as much as I did. But I’m so glad I stuck it out - the ending was so healing!
The beginning half was kinda slow and cringy. The twist at the end was crazy, didn’t see that coming. Also, all the names were so dumb.

I never understood the hype with Colleen Hoover’s books because I’d never read one. This was my first one and I have to admit, I totally get it now. I don’t usually leave reviews but I felt I had to for this one. This book was intense, heartbreaking, honest, and suspenseful. I am so excited to read all the others and get lost in those just like I did with Sky and Dean.
