This book is very ambitious, with long time spans and touching a variety of topics: environmentalism, capitalism, terraforming, access to public services, personhood, gender and sexuality, identity and corporate greed. It's super creative and has lots of sense of humour interspersed with serious issues. It's very diverse with bots, animals and non-human species all living together in this terraformed planet (Sask-E). There are cyborg cows, moose, naked mole rats and sentient trains. I didn't like the execution too much, I couldn't connect to many of the characters. It felt like it could have been 3 books: there was a lot going on!

Unique and fascinating, like all of Newitz’s fiction. I enjoyed it very much, and it also kept poking me in the feels about capitalism (an area where I’m currently raw). I’m not entirely sure what to make of the “Great Bargain" and "giving other animals human-style brains" as a tool for equality and justice (the intense critique of domestication was a bit out of nowhere) … but it was certainly a bit different, and gave me a lot to mull over. My only regret is that we didn’t spend more time with the characters exploring the developing ecosystems - those bits were especially tantalizing for me.

I really enjoyed reading this. It’s truly epic in scale, covering 3 distinct time periods over 1000 years as a planet is terraformed.

The core premise is that private corporations can buy a planet and pay for its terraforming, which involves genetically modifying people to suit current conditions (eg lower oxygen ratio). But this means that as the planet develops, the genetic “recipe” has to change to match new conditions, which is also paid for and controlled by the company. What are the rights of the first peoples to continue reproducing and thriving? How much should the company be able to dictate terms to people, just because they paid for them to be created and born (to work on the planet for their whole life)?

This is a really dark, dystopian situation, but it’s presented as normal for the people born into it. The quiet horror of the indentured servitude is made more apparent in later sections, and gently leads the reader reflect on what quiet horrors we accept in our own lives, as being “just the way it is”.

On top of this dark horror is a pacy, political intrigue about different factions forming alliances and making enemies in the name of steering the planet in their preferred direction. The characters are diverse in all manner of ways (once you start genetic modification, why stick to only humanoid bodies?). There are queer romances and liaisons, and an ultimately hopeful message about the power of community to sustain us through hard times.

I liked the diversity in people and the concepts of this book. I just felt like sometimes it was too slow paced for me and sometimes felt like a slog to get through. I picked this out for bookclub and unfortunately it wasn't a hit for any of us :(
