This book was refreshing and unique in a way that makes me excited for the future of speculative fiction. On one hand I was reminded of Asimov and foundation and on the other I was blown away about the whimsy of Newitz's imagination. It took me a few days to process the connection between things like 23and me and the ownership of an entire population. Not to mention the revolutionary idea of the Great Bargain. And despite how hopeful the systems of the Terraformers universe are set out in the beginning of the book, there is a dark thread underneath it all that makes me glad fiction like this is being written.

Wonderful addition to hopeful sci-fi with Newitz characteristic unusual but kind characters facing an off world threat that seeks to impose without understanding the world around them. But kindness and understanding take the day.

I could not find myself caring about the characters. It was kind of bizarre. I liked the overall story and the world that was built but the characters did not fill it in well. Felt forced.
