I am not going to say I really wanted to like this book as I went into it without any expectations after a search for the best sci-fi novels of the year.
Regardless, it’s absurd.
It feels like a school eco, vegan, anti-capitalist presentation with cartoonish, shallow characters and loopholes galore. You’d applaud the kids for effort, but this is supposed to be an adult book for adults.
I’m genuinely concerned that a book like this was such a massive hit and it further reinforces my belief that democracy and reviewing is massively skewed and it’s only becoming worse.

expanding intelligences
Anna Lee Newitz’s book, The Terraformers, is a brilliantly written long view science fiction that at its heart is about people and what’s intelligence and also responsible government. It is in several sections, often years apart, that build on the prior sections while adding to narrative and ideas. The relevant use of relationships and some focussing on individuals make the book more alive and relatable. An amazing, fantastic read - WOW!

Complex, but a compelling read. Lots of detail and creativity woven with believable science. This is an interesting read that makes you think about what could be, but also acts as commentary on current culture and politics. Glad I picked this up as it challengers my thinking in multiple ways.

Would have liked some more character development, but absolutely loved the unique worldbuilding and the intergenerational storytelling!
