Overall I enjoyed this book. It felt at times like a condensed version of KSR's Mars Trilogy. Which isn't bad. One of my favorite trilogies.

Otherwise I found the characters interesting, though given the scope we rarely got to really know very many of them.

Just couldn’t like this book. The story was fine, the characters just didn’t engage me though and there was too much world building in what essentially reads like a YA novel.
It was such a confusing mixed bag of ideas and execution that really felt like they could have been used for a couple of separate novels. I think the writer has potential, but this book just isn’t there yet.

An interesting read but it just didn’t mesh for me.

The satire simply wasn't working for me -- the goofiness felt forced and random, and it just gave me unhinged Disney vibes -- not in the romping, dark-existential, hysterical way, but just in a directionless, nonsensical way. It felt like watching a stranger who is really, *really* trying to pull off a funky statement hat, but even though you don't know them (and even though you're kind of rooting for them anyway, 'cause they seem like a totally decent h. sapiens, and it's a really cool hat after all), you can just kind of tell that it's not their usual style, and they end up looking painfully self-conscious and uncomfortable. Maybe I'm demonstrating this whole stupid analogy for you in my directionless, nonsensical review, but there you go, more evidence that Newitz is not vibing with me. Now I'm off to console myself with my next Becky Chambers read.
