Poetry anthology where each poem is an 'epitaph' of sorts for a citizen of Spoon River, mostly dishing on each other and how they died, but some are serious and rather poignant. Not a huge fan of most of the poems (or the style tbh), but a few are really good. So far (at only a third of the way through) my favorite poem is probably that of Serepta Mason. Not sure I'll finish to be honest, but it was a pleasant skim through and nice vibe for spooky season evening reading with a cup of tea.
I've been reading this one in like 10 character chunks for a while now, finally finished. Interesting read, some bits were dry and uninteresting but I think that's kind of the point.
My acting teacher has used the same 20 excerpts from this anthology for over a year now, so I thought I’d get a copy and read the whole thing. I’m glad I did!
"Life is too strong for you -
It takes life to love Life."

I started this with excitement, expecting to find a poetic story of small town American life. It was there, but I feel that [a:Edgar Lee Masters|126468|Edgar Lee Masters|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1286402533p2/126468.jpg] didn't quite have the steam to really bring the story to life. I could see a few storylines hidden in the poems, but for the length of the collection, I don't feel they were ever revealed enough. The last quarter of poems could possibly have been removed completely- they didn't contribute enough to the story of Spoon River.
I liked the idea of the Spooniad - an attempt at retelling the story of Spoon River as epic, Illiad-like poetry, but Masters would have done better to stick with the individual poems and tie them together better.

Y'all, this book is whack. Like it's the most stream of consciousness nonsense l've ever heard. But it does manage to really capture the human condition in the moments in between the craziness.
I'm really happy I read this. I found a lot of this book really enjoyable and I'm already really excited to reread it.
