Funny to see that, of course, Naylor is compared to Toni Morrison on the first edition dust jacket, as if they really have any similarities beyond blackness. Morrison really is that inescapable name for white intelligentsia. Be better, people.

At first I struggled to find a rhythm with this book, and perhaps reading just a page or two at night made that even more difficult. And once I found myself immersed in the stories of the women of Brewster Place, the ending left me struggling to find closure and I went back and re-read it several times to see if I was missing something. I don't think I missed anything, and this book just did not seem to work for me.

[1982] National Book Award Winner. (notes to self…) Could almost stand alone as short stories. Hovers just above gritty. Writing and descriptions, rich and interesting. Gorgeous description of how a street dies. Characters come to life. Balances hope and despair, warmth and cruelty, acceptance and frustration. The dialogue faltered a little in my ears, could have used a little more subtlety in a few cases - so explicit and on the nose that the character became a caricature of someone who would say these things. Not exactly uplifting to begin with, then takes some even darker turns. Really interesting look into the lives of these women.
