I really need to read more true crime non-fiction, but I'm not sure anything published currently will compare to Michelle McNamara's skill. The particular skill with which she tells story, invests her readers in a vast labyrinth of details, clues, people, in the mystery of an unknown criminal. Well, not so unknown now.
I hope somewhere, Michelle knows the impact she's had. I hope she heard the cell door close. I hope she saw him walk into the light.

I’ve been wanting to read I’ll Be Gone in the Dark for a while now and I’m so glad I finally got a chance to read it because this book is EXCELLENT. It’s sad because the author passed before the book was published AND before the Golden State Killer was captured, but she wrote such an amazing book that I think she would be PROUD just like her family is. This book chronicles what happened to the victims of the Golden State Killer in the late 70’s and early 80’s. It also goes through how DNA processing has evolved since then which ultimately led to the capture of this awful man. I think readers will find it interesting to see just how far we’ve come in terms of DNA evidence because I sure was! This book certainly gets on your nerves because of how LONG at took to capture this serial killer, but it sheds light on WHY finding him wasn’t easy. Through extensive research, amazing friends who completed this book for her, and so much more, this nonfiction is an absolute winner.

this book was more biography than I thought it was going to be. i’ve never been more blue balled by a book then page 305. I am also VERY upset about the epilogue/appendix, both bc it barely talks about how the GSK was caught but also because so many people discredit McNamara’s involvement entirely. Absolutely would recommend this book if you’re okay with HUGE amounts of detail about the case up until 2016 when we get basically nothing because McNamara died in her sleep.
