One part memoir, one part dizzying search for the EAR/Golden State Killer, all parts amazing. Devastated the author never got to learn his name.

Having listened to this book as an audio book, I am able to give it 3 stars. I know myself, and I know I wouldn’t have been able to consume “I’ll Be Gone In The Dark” in its entirety if I had read text on page. Nonfiction, at times, can be a struggle for me. However, Michelle McNamara has a compelling voice and is able to deliver a vast amount of dry content with a level of colour that keeps the interest of a layperson.
If true crime is an interest for you, specifically the intricacies of in-depth investigation of cold cases, then “I’ll Be Gone In the Dark” may interest you. Though certainly an outlier in my reading history, I recognize the quality of this non-fiction novel. The 3 star rating does not reflect writing quality or thoroughness of the work, but my personal interest in the subject matter as a whole.
