This book was gruesome, and I suppose that does make a lot of sense given the subject matter. At times it felt too gratuitous though, like the author(s) were more focused on the details of the crimes than the investigation aspects. I also thought it would wrap up how the GSK was ultimately caught, and that’s on me as I could’ve researched whether the book really gets into it or not. Overall, way too detailed and graphic.

I’m not a huge True Crime person, so I’d probably give the book 4 stars; however, as it was instrumental in catching the MF’r I think that’s bumps it up to 5.

I admit to putting this book on my wish list after hearing it was published post-mortem after the sadly early death of Patton Oswalt’s wife.

THEN he was caught so I suggested it for book club.

The more/ most eerie feelings when reading I’ll Be Gone were related to the obsession McNamara and hundreds (thousands?) of others have had over this unsolved case take over and destroy their lives.

Don’t get me wrong, reading about Golden State made me furious, feel repulsed, and ultimately sorrow for the communities stricken in terror, taking turns sleeping, patrolling on neighbourhood watches!

A friend commented at how many details they got right, but I’m almost wary to go down that rabbit hole! What a tragedy! For the victims, their friends and family, the police, the amateur detectives, everyone whose life was altered completely by someone not worthy of our attention. A shit-stain in American history that has finally been caught and will hopefully be forgotten.

It's so great to read non-fiction, particularly true crime, and have the story be told from such a genuinely caring author! I often have an issue with non-fiction feeling too dry, but Michelle McNamara's voice really comes through her writing style, making this an exceptionally engaging read. Unfortunately, her untimely death left the book unfinished, and a lot of it was pieced together from her notes, which makes it feel uneven. This, obviously, is not the author's fault, but it's something that definitely had an effect on my reading experience. Still, I found this book fascinating and didn't want to put it down. An excellent read for anyone interested in true crime!

This is definitely one of my favorite books of 2018. Compulsively readable and thrilling, but with all the personal details that really make a story something special, [b:I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer|35068432|I'll Be Gone in the Dark One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer|Michelle McNamara|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1499131009s/35068432.jpg|56363890] is the best true crime book I've read in a while. I didn't want to put it down and nearly didn't for two full days. If you enjoy true crime or thrillers, don't miss this one.

This disturbing and so interesting! Also, a bit heartbreaking that Michelle passed away before she could see the killer caught.
