I don’t think true crime as a genre is for me but I was still really sucked in! And scared after I was finished reading.
I think some of the popularity of this book comes from an approach that’s a lot more considerate and compassionate toward the victims than a lot of true crime media I’ve seen and the author seemed to genuinely want to help solve this mystery.
And it’s really cool that it actually was solved after this was published! This also made me think about how cops are really not good at actually preventing crimes even tho the narrative was pretty pro-cop overall.

Honestly? It needed some editing. Things are repeated unnecessarily though the book, and they’re things that we’ve heard multiple times already—job titles, where victims were assaulted or killed. It’s just a little grating—I know, OK? You’ve said it 100 times!

That being said, the story is told in a compelling way, and humanizing for the victims. I enjoyed how it was equal parts true crime and memoir, which helped draw me in.

Read this after watching the HBO miniseries. The additional material in the book is valuable, but maybe not essential unless you have a deep interest in the case.

Dogged, methodical and personable, the author shone a light on and sparked public interest in cold cases. I enjoyed learning about the various processes (interviews, crime scene drive throughs, blog conversations, etc) the author used to research her book. I'm happy the author got her wish in the end: the Golden State Killer caught.
