Read this after watching the HBO miniseries. The additional material in the book is valuable, but maybe not essential unless you have a deep interest in the case.

Dogged, methodical and personable, the author shone a light on and sparked public interest in cold cases. I enjoyed learning about the various processes (interviews, crime scene drive throughs, blog conversations, etc) the author used to research her book. I'm happy the author got her wish in the end: the Golden State Killer caught.
I’m not completely sure how I feel about this. I’m deeply impressed by Michelle McNamara and how much she put into the research and writing this book. After finishing it I got curious and searched a bit about Michelle, that’s when I found out she had died (RIP) before she knew the impact of her work and before she could witness the Golden State Killer being arrested, and then I cried A LOT.
However while reading I often found myself disconnected from it. I think it’s probably because of the way each “chapter” was put together, which made me confused and lost quite a lot. And there’s also the lack of closure, which is definitely not Michelle’s fault but made me feel like I read someone’s journal where nothing was new and there wasn’t any type of climax or something.

Her writing is super readable, and she provides the gore-y details in perfectly timed doses. Her dedication to justice, honesty, and openness to share her personal shortcomings show through, adding a layer of humanity to this gruesome story. She gives ample credit to others who worked on the case, and she was clearly in it to catch the guy rather than gain personal glory.
I found it odd that she only referred to him as EAR/ONS when she had come up with such a great nickname. It's also a shame that it isn't twice as long. Especially in the third section where she discusses meeting Paul Holes and other investigators, the transition was a little cumbersome. I mostly wish she had the time to finish the book in its entirety.
The subject matter is compelling and perfectly suited to an in-depth book like this. If you're interested in true crime/serial killers and learning as much as you can about this story then definitely read it.
