"He loses his power when we know his face." And we now do.

This book, praised by many, indeed lives up to its reputation as a remarkable piece of investigative journalism. (Even with us now knowing the end.) The captivating figure of its author, the late Michelle McNamara is what sets this story apart. Her relentless pursuit of the Golden State Killer, a title she coined herself, is truly remarkable. Amidst her high-profile family life, McNamara dedicated herself wholly to the hunt, delving into online searches, crime scene reconstructions, witness interviews, and psychological profiling. Gillian Flynn aptly notes in the introduction the responsibility of consuming true crime stories, praising McNamara's doggedness, insightfulness, and humanity in her writing. McNamara's narrative avoids sensationalism, offering detailed yet sensitive depictions of the crimes and their victims, portraying them as individuals rather than mere historical footnotes. I wish McNamara had been here to witness his eventual capture and prosecution.

It was a really great sleuth read except the unfulfilling ending. A true crime read with explicit details about the East Area Rapist more commonly know as the Golden State Killer. I dug deep into the research that Michelle McNamara provided and did investigative work on my own as well!

Obsessive. What does this word conjure in your minds eye? For me it’s undaunted endurance. The will to outlast. The sheer volume of deafening silence around you while your brain is marveling the details.

I first heard if this case via a podcast- it was the singular, scariest thing I have ever listened to. This says a lot of you know me. I have consumed an above average amount of murder content. This story literally kept me up at night. My husband, daily, had to endure my half finished rants and ramblings. East Area Rapist had become a household name here. It is very easy to see how someone could become obsessed.

I wasn’t able to start this book until well after the EAR-ONS, Golden State Killer, was caught. I thought if it would someone make me less scared. I was wrong. The author literally eats, sleeps and breathes the case. She fully pulls you in and you become their trusty sidekick. It’s deeply upsetting to know the conclusion of this killer identity when the author did not. It’s an unfair world we live in that someone so dedicated to finding the truth was robbed of life and answers and the cold blooded killer still draws breath.

I haven’t slept since finishing the last page.

This book was both terrifying and ultimately sad... And frustrating. Cold cases have a really personal significance to me, and it's refreshing to experience someone trying desperately to solve a case rather than focusing on the sensationalized aspects of the crime or making the bad guy into a pseudo-romanticized fictional character.
