Fascinating, both the story and the story about the story. The tone of the book is a good balance, not focusing too much on the gory details or lionizing the perpetrator, focusing more on the investigation itself. Make no mistake, it is grim material, but she's presented it well.

Excellent true crime investigation by a journalist, along with details of her own life. I think the audiobook lost some of the appeal because I was constantly trying to figure out when/where we were and it seemed to lose me, but the work McNamara accomplished without formal training as a detective is groundbreaking.

Interesting but no killer in the end.

This was so interesting - as much about the true crime author herself as about the search to piece together the identity of one of California’s most prolific serial rapists & murderers. The book was written prior to the arrest of the actual killer and focuses more on the act of the search, who the victims were, and the way DNA evidence and the internet have changed criminal investigations. Still, it felt unfinished to me. Portions pieced together from her researchers felt less coherent, and notably missed her personal voice and touch that weaved the story together.

I rate simply: 5 = liked it, 3 = meh, and 1 = didn't like it.

Unbelievably well-written. You’re essentially reading geography points, and old police reports, but you don’t get bogged down in the information overload of numbers and facts. Reads like a story...as if you’re right there with the inspectors following the tracker dogs, trying to catch him.

Terrifying read—not only because of the creepiness of his crimes, but because of his ability to hide in plain sight.
