I, Zombie

Such an interesting take on zombies. Really original and expanded my thoughts on how zombies would operate and be created. I think a lot of zombie novels forget to expand upon the actual zombie itself, so this was extremely interesting to me from a mythological point of view. The characters were all complex and had diverse backgrounds, but all really told the same story: they were turned and had some control over their thoughts and action for a bit before the primal zombie took over and they could no longer do anything more than search for food. The horror and the concept were interesting and well expanded upon, however, I think there was too many different points of views that never really got finished. These left me wondering what was happening. As well, the different points of views were at times confusing because they didn't really overlap with one another so I was unsure as to why certain character's stories were grouped together while others were not.
Overall: 3.5/5 stars but rounded up for the star calculator! For fans of zombie lore and anyone who wants a fresh perspective on something that has been done multiple, multiple times.

If you don't mind that there's not much of a traditional plot (it's more like a series of stories) then I think you'd really like this book. Not that there isn't an overall story, but it's not typical. That said, it is the most creative and horrifying zombie story I've ever read. That's all I'm going to say.

First, please note this is completely unrelated to the tv show of the same name. Second, Hugh Howey is an amazing writer. He is so descriptive without being wordy. this book was such a fresh, yet totally screwed up, take on the zombie genre - it's completely from the perspective of the human souls trapped inside the zombie bodies. Disturbing and heartbreaking. Walking Dead will never be the same for me now. :(

Loved it!!!!

Gruesome, horrific, and totally engaging. Made World War Z even more terrifying. A definite must read for any zombie fan.

Different perspective than the 'typical' zombie apocalypse.
VERY violent

This book is just awesome. The things I enjoyed the most? I loved that it was written from the Zombie's perspective....that there were still people inside! Cool. I liked that different people and their experiences were the focus of each part of the book...sometimes I like that better than one central character. It gives insight into how this is effecting each of them...what they miss about being human...how they feel about their zombie fate, etc. I also enjoyed that Mr. Howey did not reveal how this zombie "infection" started...leaving some mystery is fun. The only thing I didn't like is the abrupt end....there was no conclusion! With that said.....Mr. Howey....please tell me there is a sequel and it is coming soon?????? I need to know where this shuffle is going and what kind of havoc they are going to cause! Are they going to leave NYC? Are the doctors going to do something to Darnell? What happened to Carmen's baby? So many unanswered questions.....[a:Hugh Howey|3064305|Hugh Howey|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1327581631p2/3064305.jpg]

The premise of the story is completely original: what if trapped inside the zombies, there are still human minds totally aware of the terrible things their bodies are doing, and completely helpless to stop them, to stop themselves. It is heartbreaking.

Not your usually zombie book. At all.

Trigger warning: there's a lot of gore involved, but I think that as the zombies are aware of it and are experiencing and sharing it with you, the reader, it turns up being much less gratuitous than you might think, certainly much less gratuitous than in most zombie stories.

This book was like a group of short stories of several characters who become zombies. I love how Mr. Howey can change from one character to another believably and was interested in what each character experienced, how they accepted their fate, and the horrors they experienced. I would not recommend this book to the squeamish as it is full of gore and unpleasantness.

If you want to think about what it would be like to be a zombie, this may be the book for you! Otherwise, it's quite a drab exercise, entirely lacking in plot. Like the zombies inside it, reading is drudgery.
