Oh my gosh. I laughed. I sobbed. I laughed while I sobbed. I read this whole book in one day. Cover to cover. Even though it is a somewhat predictable overall plot, you can’t stop reading. It is so well written. I think most of us know an Ove in our lives. So many times, I could hear Ove’s words being said by my grandfather. Curmudgeonly, crass, but lovable all the same. A wonderful read. If I could give it 6 stars, I would.

Every time I read this book, I somehow fall even more in love with it. It was my introduction to Fredrik Backman, and it highlights all the things I love about his writing and stories.

Ove is amazing. The supporting characters are amazing. I want to live in this world forever.

I loved this book. The story of a grumpy autistic man who's unwillingness to step outside of his routine who's life is changed (for the better) by his neighbours being so rude (wanting to find community and be friendly with their neighbours)

I read the last ~30 pages through tears

This was so very different from Beartown,  which I also loved, and I didn’t enjoy it at first. However, the cast of diverse characters really grows on you despite being a short novel. It was poignant, sad but uplifting at the same time, and unexpectedly, funny for a story about old age, loss, attempted suicide, and one terrible incident after another.

Not as heart-pulverizing as the Beartown series, but still made me weep. Wacky characters so hyperbolically human you can’t help but care about them.

This is a hard one for me to rate. The first half of the book was fine, nothing special. The last 40 or so pages had me sobbing though. Such a beautiful ending. I loved all of the side characters and Ove himself definitely grew on me. Well worth the read and pushing through the slow start.
