Juan de la Cruz's Dark Night of the Soul did not quite resonate with me as it probably would have 10-15 years ago. Portions of the book spoke to me, but eventually I found myself reading quickly just to get through it. What spoke to me the most was Mirabai Starr's introduction, so much so that I've begun reading her memoir, Caravan of No Despair.

Beautiful book. I can see why it's considered a classic of Christian literature.

A beautiful, poetic and sensual piece of devotional literature. If you have ever gone through a "dark night of the soul," then this book will shine meaning and insight into the darkness, presented in the form of poetry that is at times cryptic, at other times deeply resonant. A wonderful read, worthy of reflection.

The translation is more up to date, but still it is not really to be understood with our intellect. I feel that I get more from the poem itself than I do from St. John of the Cross' explanation of it. The reason for me seems to be that the poem hits me at a different level than the explanation. The introduction is helpful. I'm thankful for this translation which did at least allow me to read something I've tried to read previously.
